It is truly amazing what people will post on social media and say in public that is not true. Here’s a few thoughts that I have on the subject.

1. I’m sure your mom told you the same thing my mom told me — If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. If you feel compelled to spend the entire day writing hate posts about gay marriage at least have the decency to post things that you check for accuracy. Stating that someone said something without doing any due diligence to find out if it’s the truth should put you back in the “I’m going to wash your mouth out with soap” line.

2 How about the golden rule – do unto others as you would have them do to you? Why the racist remarks and hate speech? Do you really want the shoe to be on the other foot? Of course not.

3. A mentor used to tell me there’s a paddle big enough for everyone’s rear-end. If you put it out there, be careful because it’s going to come back around.

4. Just because a particular religious or political group you follow says something doesn’t make it the truth. Don’t drink the kool-aid and forget to do your own research.

5. Does anyone else feel down after reading the hate posts? I sure do. I want to be happy and enjoy my social media friends and contacts. It only takes a few folks talking about their hate to put me in a bad mood. You can ask anyone at the office, you don’t want to see me in a bad mood.

I’m all in favor of communication, you guys know that. I’m also OK with each of us having a difference of opinion. My concern is the level and volume of hate speech today.

Take care, Jeff
